African Union Granted Permanent Membership in the G20

In a significant moment on the global stage, the African Union (AU) has officially become a permanent member of the Group of 20 largest economies (G20). This historic development was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the inaugural session of the two-day G20 Summit. The move marks a step toward more inclusive and equitable global governance.

The African Union, comprises of 55 member states representing the diverse nations of the African continent, has long played a pivotal role in advocating for the concerns, challenges, and aspirations of the Global South, particularly the African continent. India, in recent years, has taken a leading position in voicing these issues on the international stage.

Prime Minister Modi's role in championing the AU's G20 membership is notable. He first proposed the idea in June and subsequently worked diligently to gain support from other G20 leaders. This endeavor culminated in the formal inclusion of the proposal in the draft communique for the G20 Summit during the third G20 Sherpas meeting held in Karnataka's Hampi in July.

The significance of this development extends beyond symbolic representation. The G20, founded in 1999 in response to global economic crises, is a vital forum for addressing pressing global issues. Its member countries collectively account for approximately 85% of the world's GDP, more than 75% of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world's population. With the inclusion of the AU, the G20 now embraces a more diverse representation, reflecting the evolving dynamics of the global economy.

In an interview earlier this month, Prime Minister Modi had underscored India's commitment to making Africa a top priority in its foreign policy. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that those who feel unheard in global affairs are given a voice. The AU's permanent membership in the G20 aligns with this vision, as it provides a platform for African nations to actively participate in shaping global policies and addressing shared challenges.

As Union of Comoros President and AU Chairperson Azali Assoumani took his seat as a full member of the G20, it marked a historic moment of unity and inclusivity in global governance. This decision is a testament to the principle of "sabka saath" (with everyone), reflecting the spirit of collaboration and cooperation that should guide international relations.
