Modi-Biden Meet: Strengthening Indo-US Ties and Global Partnerships

The G20 Summit of 2023 witnessed a highly awaited meeting between US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their discussions ranged from enhancing the Indo-US bond to addressing pressing global challenges. This blog delves into the key takeaways from their closed-door talks and explores the significance of the G20 Summit in the context of a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.

The 2023 G20 Summit, hosted in the national capital of Delhi, Is set to be a pivotal event on the international stage. At its heart was a highly anticipated meeting between US President Joe Biden and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their discussions were held behind closed doors, fueling curiosity and speculation about the future of Indo-US relations and the global alliances they seek to forge.

The Prime Minister's Office in India wasted no time in informing the public about the significance of the meeting. They revealed that the talks encompassed a wide range of issues aimed at further deepening the bond between India and the United States. The warmth of this growing relationship was evident from the moment President Biden landed in India and was received by Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways and Civil Aviation, Gen VK Singh (retd).

A joint statement issued by the White House following their bilateral talks shed light on the progress made in implementing the groundbreaking achievements stemming from Prime Minister Modi's historic visit to Washington in June 2023. Notably, the leaders expressed their appreciation for the completion of the Congressional Notification process on August 29, 2023. This milestone marked the commencement of negotiations for a commercial agreement between GE Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) to manufacture GE F-414 jet engines in India. The commitment to expedite this co-production and technology transfer proposal highlights the growing synergy in defense and technology cooperation between the two nations.

Beyond bilateral agreements, the joint statement emphasized the importance of the Quad alliance in supporting a free, open, inclusive, and resilient Indo-Pacific. Both PM Modi and President Biden underscored the need for their governments to continue working together to transform the Indo-US strategic partnership across all dimensions. This reaffirmation of their commitment to the Quad comes at a crucial juncture when regional stability and security are paramount concerns.

President Biden's approach to international diplomacy places great importance on personal connections, as demonstrated by his state visit to India in June. However, it's worth noting that much of this diplomacy occurs behind the scenes, away from the public eye. During the G20 Summit, White House reporters accompanying President Biden were denied access to the leaders' meeting, underlining the discreet nature of their discussions.

Despite the limited public visibility of their interactions, it is evident that the two leaders have fostered a strong working relationship over the past couple of years. They have engaged in more than a dozen in-person and virtual meetings since 2021, reflecting their joint efforts to solidify the US-India partnership. This partnership is seen as vital in addressing shared concerns, including an increasingly assertive China, the monumental challenges posed by climate change, the impact of artificial intelligence, and the imperative of ensuring global supply chain resilience.
